Music was added to grade school curriculums across the United States taught by general teachers after the Civil War (1861-1865)
Shaped Notes (different shaped note heads) for music notation was developed by Andrew Law until the notation we know today.

The "Wedding March" is often used as a recessional for the bride and groom to leave at the end of a wedding. It was composed by Mendelssohn for Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" originally not meant to be used at a wedding. People often get the names mixed up, but recognize the compositions when they hear them.

John Philip Sousa
John Philip Sousa - Known as "The March King"- famous for composing marches - Conductor of "The President's Own" Band at the White House for 5 Presidents before leaving the Marine Corps to Start Sousa's Band.
One of Sousa's Band Members - Bohumir Kryl later started the Chicago Women's Symphony during WW II and hired Mrs. Randolph's Mother (Anna Fay Herron - later Mrs. Bush) to play oboe in the symphony because all the men had been called to war and musicians were needed in the USA. She was the only woman to conduct the symphony. Her things are in the Sousa Library at the University of IL - Champaign. See links below if interested.
