The Renaissance Period (1450-1600) - Renaissance = Re-birth or Revival
As we discussed - During the Medieval Period people worked very hard just to live. Many people died at a young age due to unsanitary living conditions, wars, and lack of medical knowledge. Many people died from the Bubonic Plague (Black Death) during the Medieval Period as we discussed in class.
During the Renaissance more instruments were developed including plucked string instruments like the lute, bowed string instruments like the viol, and flutes, recorders, and horns.
Music notation continued to be developed with line and space notes.
c. 1439 Gutenberg invented the moveable type/printing press and refined it by c. 1454 (this helped increase literacy and education)
c. 1478 Lorenzo de Medici ruler of Florence 1st Private Patron of the Arts from Florence, Italy (patron - person who paid artists to create music and art work - in the past the church paid artists)
Artist/ Inventor - Leonardo da Vinci (Painter of Mona Lisa, Last Supper, had design for helicopter)
Artist & Sculptor - Michelangelo Buonarroti (Painter of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling, sculptor of David, La Pieta, +
sacred = religious
secular = nonreligious

Go to the web sites below and read about George F. Handel - Born 2-23- 1685; Died 4-14-1759. He is buried in Westminster Abbey Church (London, England). Famous for his "Messiah" Oratorio (Oratorio is a story told through singing ONLY accompanied by orchestra with NO acting, NO sets, NO costumes) - famous song in the "Messiah" is the "Hallelujah Chorus".
